ARISTOTLE AND DANTÉ DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE
by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Simon and Schuster BFYR, 2012
Aristotle and Dante affect each other’s young lives in irreversible and indelible ways. It’s a very unconventional love story that doesn’t dumb down the scope of what a teenager feels and goes through on their paths to finding themselves.
This novel has great heart and beauty and pain and discovery. And it’s not difficult to read. I’m most impressed with the story’s ability to show great discomfort and growing pains without making me feel so uncomfortable that I want to put the book down. As a read, I was so taken by the very gentle journey Aristotle (“Ari”) takes. And I love the relationships with both sets of parents –something that seems to be getting less rare these days.
I’m sure every review out there describes the beauty of this novel. So all I’m going to say is that I fell in love with one person’s journey to allow himself to love and be loved, to allow himself not to be boxed in by the definitions around him.
