THE RED QUEEN
by Victoria Aveyard
HarperTeen (HarperCollins), 2015

Anyone can betray anyone.

Those born with silver blood are the elite class-based families gifted with a dizzying array of magical and elemental abilities that ultimatedly oppress and enslave the ordinary born of red-blood, forcing them to fight their wars for them.

Mare Barrow is a 17-year old pickpocket from The Stilts who becomes embroiled in the elite silver-blooded royal family’s competitive machinations when its discovered that she possesses latent abilities that she simply shouldn’t have.  To save her family and her brothers conscripted to war, she plays along with the royal family’s attempts to hide her ability in plain sight. But nothing in this book is that simple: she’s eventually torn between two royal brothers and a loyal friend from the oppressed class. Mare must navigate the dangerous and dire, ever-changing landscape and somehow remain true to herself, her family and her red-blooded people.

No one is quite who they seem, and that makes reading this a page-turner! The plot has more twists than a snaking river, with the author constantly increasing the stakes for poor Mare until you wonder how she could ever break free of her terribly bleak fate. I loved the world and the characters, and I can’t wait to read the next installment in this fascinating magical world.
